Google Latitude was a famous location aware feature in Google Maps which was retired by Google on August 9th, 2013, along with all related assets like its API and the iGoogle gadget. Earlier announcements by Google created a lot of outcry, as many users had become accustomed to using Google Latitude for sharing their location and one could even find friends who were in the vicinity.
While Google Latitude features will be available in Google Plus, there have been a few user complaints about the difficulty in using Google+ Location Sharing. Furthermore, many users would perhaps like to have an app which can be used as an alternative on their Android devices. Hemisphere is a free Google Latitude app alternative, which might just be the best alternative on Google Play.
For those of you who may be new to the concept of location sharing, it can have a wide range of benefits, including the ability to instantly share your location to help others find you, (ever been lost as a tourist?). Similarly, it can be arguably easier to see directions on a mobile device than trying to make sense of directions given by your friends. Let’s assume you are getting late for your PowerPoint Presentation and need to find the convention center, in such a case your friend who is already present at the convention center can share his location to help you find your way.
The Hemisphere app has a familiar-looking map interface, with a “Me” bubble displaying your location. However, your friends will not show up by default and you will have to add them yourself. Moreover, your friends will require this app and have to approve your request. Friends can be added to the app by tapping the (+) button (at the right) from the top bar.
Hemisphere has been especially designed for people who liked the latitude app and has many similar features. Not only can you share your location and find friends nearby with Hemisphere, but also hide your location from certain people. Some of the primary features of this app are as follows:
Hemisphere currently has a solid rating of 4.4 on Google Play and works with Android 4.0 or above.
